Glenlea Downs Stud Suffolk Sires
Breaking News

Glenlea Downs Suffolk’s three resident sires have performed exceptionally well in a National Across Flock Evaluation, done by SIL in May 2009.

Both rams 68/06 and 84/06 are by Goldstream 192/05 the number ONE/138 ranked sire in the evaluation, with a TSO of 1140.

68/06 has a TSO of 910, and is ranked 9th/138 sires of all age groups.
84/06 has a TSO of 822, and is ranked 19th/138 sires of all age groups.

Phoebe 209/06 delivered a TSO of 735, and is ranked 30th/138 sires of all age groups.  Quite an exceptional effort for a ram with an outcross pedigree, compared to all the other high fliers in the industry.

The evaluation group encompasses 15 of the strongest Suffolk flocks in the country.

138 sires were in the evaluation group.

Glenlea Downs Suffolks have the genetic power to make a real difference to your bottom line.

Glenlea Downs Suffolk's are bred with both the farmer and the consumer in mind by making use of services like SIL (Sheep Improvement Ltd) for recording and genetic evaluation.
In layman’s terms, SIL is a performance recording and genetic evaluation service for the New Zealand sheep industry, which ranks animals according to their genetic merit. Raw data is adjusted to allow for environmental fluctuations. This way, the genetically superior animals are ranked ahead of their inferior mates. Picking a genetically good sheep by eye is outdated and flawed. A triplet lamb born to a two tooth late in the season will not be as big as a large single lamb born to an old ewe in the first week of lambing. That is not to say that the smaller sheep is inferior, he may in fact be far superior, particularly if the survivability and maternal attributes are taken into account. SIL calculates and allows for this. We also EMA scan in the autumn. We believe this is the economically relevant time to measure a sheep’s’ EMA. After all, prime lamb production is the purpose of the breed. How he measures at 14-15 months of age is irrelevant if you want his progeny on the truck to the works at 100 days.
We are willing to help any farmer with their ram selection and will happily discuss the benefits of the Suffolk breed in today's market place.

Sire 192/05 sold at 2006 National Sale for record price of $13,000 for half share.  192/05 has progeny in 7 countries.  3 direct relatives in top 5 in National Across Flock Evaluation Rankings.

  • In a SIL report covering 12 on NZ’s top Suffolk flocks, with report animals from 34 studs, 68/06 is third of 133 sires on the May 2008 Sire Summary.  His father and brother fill the first two places.  This report includes all ages of sires used within the report flocks.
  • In the SIL May 2008 Ram Selection List, the report which ranks the 2007 born rams for future stud selection, there are 1323 animals included in the report. 68/06 ranks FIRST as the sire of the top ranking 2007 born Suffolk Ram.  He ranks ahead of his father, who is second.  This demonstrates a strong genetic gain from one generation to the next.
  • Breeding from recorded proven families ensures genetic gain; and using SIL report information is by far the more accurate method of selecting a ram to add kilograms to your first draft lambs.
